Juneau & Douglas Pharmacy Set
This is a set of four of Juneau and Douglas Pharmacy beeswax candles, all molded from antique bottles. Included with the purchase is historical cards detailing what we know of J. W. Doran (Juneau) and Elmer Smith (Douglas).
J. W. Doran moved to Juneau, Alaska in 1895 to manage a drug store as a doctor and a chemist. These glass bottles were likely thrown away as trash over a century ago and were found in the dirt in Juneau, Alaska. There are several sizes of J.W. Doran's antique bottles. We have collected 4 sizes, but we presume to be larger out there.
"Elmer Smith Druggist Front St. Douglas, Alaska ESTB. 1901" Douglas Island, located across the channel from mainland Juneau, has significant gold town history. Treadwell Mine operated from 1882 to 1917 and employed over 2,000 people. The town included a general store, taxidermist, and druggist.
The J.W. Doran candles range in a size from 6 inches tall and 3 inches tall. The Elmer Smith candle is 4.25 inches tall.
