Douglas Dairy, Douglas Island, Alaska
This 100% pure beeswax candle is molded from an antique Douglas Dairy glass bottle. Inside of the embossing, you can see "Phone 85."
One of the rarest and most special of the replicas--The Douglas Dairy:
Information about many of Juneau's historic dairies can be found in the 1991 'Draft Report of the Juneau Dairy Farming Historic Resources Survey.' More specifically, Mathilde Kenlder (wife of Joe Kendler) wrote a memoir reflecting back on her life with Mr. Kendler in 1984 named 'Kendlers': The Story of a Pioneer Alaska Juneau Dairy.'
Douglas Dairy was purchased by Joe Kendler in 1917. It operated in an old one-room schoolhouse, which now stands as part of the Gastineau Elementary School in Douglas, Alaska. There were only 12 cows apart of Douglas Dairy at the time. In 1923, Joe purchased the "Alaska Dairy" which was over 300 acres and nine miles away from Douglas in the town of Juneau. At one point, the dairy consisted of over 100 cattle. Joe, his wife Mathilde, and other family members managed the dairy until about 1965, when the last of the land sold and Joe moved down to Washington.
The bottle that this candle was molded from was found by local scuba diver Annette G. E. Smith in Juneau, Alaska.
Please note that the bottle pictured is for reference purposes only and will not be included with your candle.
